Dr Richard Jones, BSc (Hons), MBChB, MRCP (UK), PhD
I'm a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Imaging Lead at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University. I provide consultant-led cardiology care across both NHS and private practice, with a particular focus on getting patients a clear, accurate diagnosis as quickly as possible - using non-invasive advanced cardiac imaging where appropriate.
NHS practice
In my NHS role I work at Broomfield Hospital (Chelmsford), Basildon Hospital, and the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre. Patients come to me for the rapid assessment:
Coronary artery disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia.
Research Recognition
In 2021, I was awarded the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress Young Investigator of the Year Award, one of the most competitive research awards at Europe's largest cardiology conference, in recognition of my PhD research at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.
Private practice
I see private patients at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre and Cleveland Clinic London, offering the same consultant-led approach and direct access to advanced imaging that I provide in the NHS in world-class facilities.
Rapid Diagnosis Through Cardiac Imaging
Getting the right diagnosis quickly matters - to you and to your treatment. I specialise in advanced cardiac imaging so that, wherever possible, I can give you clarity without multiple referrals or delays.
My areas of expertise:
Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) -real-time ultrasound assessment of heart structure and function
Stress echocardiography - how your heart performs under exertion
Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) - high-resolution internal imaging of the heart
Cardiac MRI - detailed evaluation of heart muscle and function
CT coronary angiography - direct imaging of the coronary arteries
I combine these with on-site blood testing, ECG, and rhythm monitoring, so most patients leave with a diagnosis and treatment plan from a single pathway.
Award Winning Cardiologist with a Research-Led Approach
My clinical practice is grounded in an academic background I still draw on daily. I completed my PhD at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, researching mitochondrial function in ischaemic heart disease and the prediction of sudden cardiac death.
That research was recognised in 2021 with the ESC Congress Young Investigator of the Year Award. It continues to shape how I approach complex and high-risk cardiac patients today. I remain an active Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University, which keeps my diagnostic and treatment approach aligned with the latest evidence in cardiovascular medicine. My full biography can be found on Pubmed.
Symptoms I Assess and Treat
Chest Pain - Rapid assessment and diagnostic testing for chest pain and angina, to identify or rule out coronary artery disease and other underlying heart conditions.
Breathlessness - Thorough assessment of breathlessness and shortness of breath to diagnose underlying heart valve disease, heart failure, or coronary artery disease.
Palpitations - Expert evaluation of palpitations and atrial fibrillation (AF), combining ECG and rhythm monitoring to identify the underlying cause.
Blackouts - Specialist investigation of blackouts and fainting episodes to identify cardiac causes such as arrhythmia or structural heart disease.
Valve disease - Assessment of symptoms associated with valve disease, including aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation, guided by advanced echocardiography.
High blood pressure and high cholesterol - Ongoing management of hypertension and high cholesterol to reduce long-term cardiovascular risk.
If you're experiencing any of these, an early assessment can bring clarity and, where needed, prompt treatment. Same-week private appointments are available in Essex and London.
